Fostering a Happy and Healthy Work Environment

As an owner of a growing business, I’m always thinking about what we, UniQuest, can do to help our employees be successful in their roles. There of course is a lot that goes into being a supportive employer – providing the right training and skill development opportunities, resourcing appropriately, communicating our vision and goals clearly. But, as we’ve matured as a business and have taken on more responsibility, I’ve been more and more concerned with ensuring we maintain a happy and healthy workplace. Not only because it’s the right thing to do, but also because it’s good for our clients and our bottom line.

According to the Health and Safety Executive, stress is a major cause of sick days and costs over £5 billion a year in Great Britain. Beyond leading to absences, too much stress hampers creative thinking, morale and productivity.

We want our employees to look forward to coming to work! We want to do everything we can to sustain a culture where our team loves what they do and where they feel they have all the support they need from us to achieve success. I’m not going to say that getting there is easy or straightforward. But, I did want to share one of the steps we’ve taken which has had an amazing impact on the well-being of our team.

Last year, we began working with WorkSpa. WorkSpa is corporate massage company founded by Grace Graham which brings a bit of the spa experience to the workplace. Fortnightly, we have WorkSpa massage therapists in the office to give our employees 15-minute massages. The massages are brilliant and they create a really relaxing experience by bringing equipment like an ergonomically designed chair, wireless headphones that play soothing music and lovely scents. It’s such a nice break in the workday and our team always feels rejuvenated and ready to take on the rest of the day after they’ve had a session.

When we’ve asked our team for feedback on the approaches we’ve taken to create a happy work environment, in regards to WorkSpa they’ve said:

‘I’ve never had a job that offers anything like this before, so it was a lovely surprise when I found out about it! Definitely relaxing’

‘I love it, definitely de-stresses and also helps with the usual aches and pains that come from sitting in an office chair 8 hours a day. It re-charges me!’

Working with WorkSpa has been a relatively simple change, but it’s made a big impact on our team’s well-being and I couldn’t be happier about that.
